Shrimp Casserole Recipe

This shrimp casserole combines poached, seasoned shrimp coated in a creamy mayonnaise mixture with garlic powder and black pepper, layered with shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. A buttery panko breadcrumb topping adds a crispy texture contrast after baking. The dish is baked uncovered at 375°F until the center reaches a safe temperature, resulting in a bubbly, cheesy casserole with tender shrimp. It’s a comforting seafood dish suitable for a main course that can be prepared ahead and reheated as needed.

Description

The Shrimp Casserole Recipe features large peeled and deveined shrimp lightly cooked in Old Bay seasoned water to maintain tenderness. After cooling, the shrimp are mixed with mayonnaise, garlic powder, black pepper, and shredded cheeses, giving a rich, creamy base. A buttery panko breadcrumb topping provides a crunchy crust during the baking process at 375°F, creating a contrast to the soft, cheesy interior. The careful cooking of shrimp helps avoid excess moisture, though any liquid can be absorbed with a paper towel to improve the final texture.

The flavor is savory with a hint of Old Bay seasoning that complements the seafood. The cheeses contribute meltiness and mild sharpness, balanced by the creamy mayo and subtle garlic notes. The panko topping adds a golden crust that enhances the casserole’s mouthfeel.

This casserole can be served warm as a main dish alongside simple sides or a green salad. It is easy to prepare ahead by assembling the shrimp mixture and refrigerating before topping and baking. Leftovers can be kept refrigerated for a few days and reheated in the oven or air fryer while preserving texture.

For best results, use a 2 1/2-quart casserole dish or a deep skillet. If excess liquid appears after baking, it often results from overcooked or improperly thawed shrimp and can be managed by soaking it up. Planning ahead by refrigerating the assembled shrimp mixture up to three days before baking helps streamline serving.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 lbs Shrimp 21-24 count, peeled and deveined, large
  • 1 Tbsp Old Bay seasoning plus 1 Tbsp salt for the cooking water
  • 2/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper ground
  • 1 Tbsp butter plus more to grease the pan
  • 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 4 oz mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 4 oz cheddar cheese medium, shredded

Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 375 ̊F. Grease a 2 1/2 quart casserole dish* or skillet with butter.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add 1 Tbsp salt and 1 Tbsp Old Bay Seasoning. Add the shrimp and cook for 30 seconds or just when the shrimp are opaque and cooked through. Immediately remove with a strainer and transfer to a large mixing bowl. Let it cool for a few minutes then drain off any water that collects at the bottom of the bowl, or use a paper towel to soak up any liquid at the bottom of the bowl.
  3. Into the shrimp, add mayo, garlic powder, and black pepper and stir to coat the shrimp. Sprinkle on the cheese and stir again to combine. Transfer the shrimp mixture to your prepared casserole dish, spreading it evenly into the pan.
  4. In a separate bowl or measuring cup, melt 1 Tbsp butter and stir in 1/2 cup bread crumbs until crumbs are evenly moistened. Sprinkle crumbs over the shrimp.
  5. Bake uncovered at 375 ̊F for 13-15 minutes or until the center reaches 145 ̊F on an instant-read thermometer then broil for 1 to 2 minutes to brown the crumbs. Rest for 15 minutes before serving.* You can serve it warm or at room temperature. It’s still delicious if you have to transport it to someone’s house for dinner!

Notes

  • Use a 2 1/2 quart casserole dish or a deep 10-inch skillet for even cooking.
  • If you find excess liquid after baking, absorb it with a paper towel to improve texture.
  • The shrimp mixture can be assembled and refrigerated up to 3 days before topping and baking.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for 2-3 days and reheat in the oven or air fryer.
