Simple Broccoli Casserole Recipe

This casserole features blanched broccoli combined with a creamy sauce of eggs, table cream, cheese, and seasonings. The broccoli provides a tender base with a light bite, while the baked mixture forms a golden, flavorful crust. Italian seasoning and optional Dijon mustard add herbaceous and mild tangy notes, complementing the mellow cheese melting throughout the dish. Olive oil finishes the top for a subtle richness and slight crispness. This recipe suits a comforting side or light vegetarian main, blending vegetable texture with creamy, savory bake qualities.

Description

The Simple Broccoli Casserole Recipe centers on broccoli florets that are quickly blanched to soften yet retain shape and color, then cooled to stop cooking. The blanched broccoli is spread evenly in a casserole dish and covered with a mixture of eggs, rich table cream, shredded cheese, Italian seasoning, black pepper, salt, and optional Dijon mustard. Baking this mixture at 350°F (180°C) allows the eggs and cream to set around the broccoli, creating a creamy interior with a golden crust. The olive oil drizzled on top adds a subtle richness and helps brown the surface.

The dish balances tender broccoli with a smooth, cheesy custard flavored gently by herbs and the slight sharpness of mustard if used. It delivers a mild, savory, and comforting flavor profile, enhanced by a melting cheese of choice such as cheddar or Gruyère, which adds depth and meltiness.

It can be served warm alongside proteins or as a standalone light meal. The creamy yet structured texture makes it pleasant for various meals, providing vegetable intake in an accessible baked form. It also offers flexibility with seasoning and cheese choices to suit different tastes.

Frozen broccoli can be used by skipping blanching, as it is typically pre-blanched before freezing. The recipe allows substitution of Italian seasoning with other dried herb blends, and mustard is optional but helps bind the sauce. Choosing flavorful melting cheeses like raclette or Parmesan improves taste. Olive oil on top ensures a nicely browned finish.

Ingredients

Servings

To blanch broccoli

  • 21.2 ounces broccoli cleaned + cut into florets, *See Notes
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • water to blanch Broccoli

For the casserole dish

  • 2 egg
  • cup table cream
  • ½ Teaspoon black pepper ground
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Italian seasoning *See Notes
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard optional
  • 1 cup cheese See Notes, shredded
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Keep a pot with water and salt to boil, and place your clean broccoli pieces into the water so that they are submerged completely. Place the timer to 3 minutes to blanch your broccoli and then take out to leave in cold running water or a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
  2. Preheat oven to 350° Fahrenheit/ 180° Celsius.
  3. In a mixing bowl combine the egg, cream, salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, mustard paste and cheese to a well-combined sauce.
  4. Place cooled broccoli pieces into a large casserole dish. Spread out so that they fit into the whole dish and that they are on a level.
  5. Pour the cream sauce mixture all over the broccoli in the casserole dish.
  6. Sprinkle olive oil over the dish.
  7. Bake the cheesy broccoli egg casserole at 350° Fahrenheit/ 180° Celsius for about 30 minutes or until it has a golden crust, it's cooked through and done.

Notes

  • Frozen broccoli can replace fresh; no blanching is needed if using frozen broccoli, as it is pre-blanched.
  • Italian seasoning can be swapped for other dried herbs such as oregano, Herb de Provence, or Mediterranean blends like Za'atar.
  • Dijon mustard is optional but helps emulsify the sauce and adds a gentle tangy flavor complementing broccoli.
  • Use cheeses that melt well and have good flavor, such as cheddar, Gruyère, Emmental, raclette, or Parmesan, alone or in combination.
