Simple Homemade White Bread Recipe

All you need to make this bakery style simple homemade bread recipe is just four ingredients, flour, water, salt, and yeast. Crusty, flavourful and with a soft chewy texture, this homemade white bread is perfect for dipping with soups, or making your favorite deli sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 500 gram bread flour or all-purpose flour
  • 10 grams salt
  • 320 grams water lukewarm
  • 13 grams fresh yeast or 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. Add the flour, salt, water, and yeast into a bowl of the stand mixer with a hook attachment. f
  2. On slow speed, mix for 5 minutes, then increase the speed to medium and continue to mix for 6 minutes or until the dough is fully developed. The dough with be smooth and elastic.
  3. Dust the dough with some flour, on top, and along the sides. Cover with a plastic sheet or cloth and allow to rest at room temperature for 60 minutes.
  4. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and divide it in half.
  5. Shape each dough piece into a round boule. If the dough is a little sticky, dust with some flour to reduce the stickiness.
  6. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place both shaped dough pieces onto it spacing them apart about 6 inches.
  7. Cover the dough and allow to proof for 45-50 minutes or until it has doubled in volume.
  8. Preheat the oven to 235°C (455°C) prior to the dough being fully proofed and place an empty shallow pan in the bottom of the oven. You will add hot water to this pan to create steam once you load the bread into the oven.
  9. Dust the top of the bread with some flour and using a sharp knife create a cross-cut over the top.
  10. Place the baking pan into the oven and pour a little bit of hot water just until it covers the bottom.
  11. Bake for about 25 to 30 minutes until the bread is golden brown.
