Simple Skillet Green Beans

Simple Skillet Green Beans deliver tender, slightly crisp green beans cooked in broth with a touch of oil or butter. The pan method crisps the edges before simmering covered to soften to your liking. Seasoned simply with salt and pepper, the green beans retain freshness while gaining a gentle depth from the broth, suitable as a quick side dish alongside many meals.

Description

Simple Skillet Green Beans features fresh green beans sautéed briefly to develop slight crispness, then simmered in chicken or vegetable broth until tender. The method begins by heating oil or butter in a large skillet and cooking the green beans to lightly brown the edges. Adding broth and covering allows gentle steaming and simmering, softening the beans while infusing subtle savory notes from the broth.

The seasoning is minimal, using salt and black pepper to highlight the vegetable's natural flavor and the broth's depth. This straightforward technique enhances the green beans without masking their fresh taste, resulting in a versatile side dish with varied texture from crisp edges to a tender center.

This preparation pairs well with a variety of main courses and is quick to prepare. Adjust the simmering time to your preferred green bean tenderness, adding liquid as needed to prevent drying.

Trimming the beans is recommended, and cutting into shorter lengths is optional depending on preference or serving style.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 teaspoon oil or butter
  • 1 pound Green bean ends trimmed, fresh
  • ¾ cup chicken broth low-sodium, or vegetable broth
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat the oil or butter over medium heat. Add the green beans and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring often, to crisp up the edges of the beans just slightly.
  2. Pour in the broth and bring the beans/broth to a simmer. Cover the skillet and cook anywhere from 6-10 minutes, depending on how tender you like your green beans. Keep an eye on the skillet - if it is simmering too vigorously and the liquid evaporates out, add a bit more as needed.
  3. Season with salt and pepper to taste and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Trim green bean ends before cooking; cutting them into 1- or 2-inch pieces is optional based on preference.
