Sirloin Steak Recipe
Description
This Sirloin Steak Recipe highlights firm and flavorful sirloin steaks, about 1¼ pounds each, prepared with an olive oil rub and seasoned generously with salt, black pepper, and a distinctive mesquite seasoning. The steaks are cooked in a skillet or on a grill over medium heat for approximately 5-8 minutes per side, depending on thickness and preferred doneness, with a recommended internal temperature of around 145°F for medium-well.
After cooking, the steaks rest for at least 5 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute, ensuring a tender bite. They are then finished with a homemade garlic herb butter that blends softened butter, garlic powder, minced garlic, and fresh parsley and thyme, complementing the savory steak with creamy and herbal flavors.
This recipe pairs well with simple side dishes like roasted vegetables or a green salad, allowing the steak's bold flavors to be the star. Oven instructions include searing steaks briefly and then transferring to a preheated 450°F oven to finish cooking, a useful method for even doneness.
Using steaks at least ¾ inch thick is recommended for optimal tenderness and flavor. The mesquite seasoning adds a smoky edge and can be substituted with dried herb blends if fresh herbs aren’t available.
Ingredients
- 4 sirloin steak about 1 1/4 pounds
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 2 teaspoons mesquite seasoning see note
garlic herb butter
- ½ cup butter softened
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon parsley see note, finely chopped, fresh
- 2 teaspoons thyme see note, fresh
Instructions
- Stir together butter, garlic powder, garlic, and herbs. Set aside.
- Pat steaks dry with a paper towel.
- Rub steaks all over with olive oil.
- Season steaks with salt and pepper to taste, and mesquite seasoning.
- Cook steaks 5-8 minutes on each side (or until cooked to desired doneness - I like mine medium-well at about 145 degrees internal temperature) in a skillet over medium heat OR on a grill over medium heat. (See note for oven instructions)
- Allow steaks to rest at least 5 minutes.
- Top with garlic herb butter and serve.
Notes
- Choose sirloin steaks at least 3/4 inch thick for better tenderness and flavor.
- Mesquite seasoning adds a smoky flavor; if unavailable, substitute with Herbs de Provence or Italian seasoning blends.
- For oven cooking, sear steaks in a cast-iron pan 1-2 minutes per side, then bake in a 450°F oven for 10 minutes (6 minutes for thinner cuts).
- Always let the steaks rest at least 5 minutes before slicing to retain juices.
