Skillet BBQ Salmon
Description
This recipe begins by heating olive oil in a skillet and searing salmon fillets skin-side up to develop a slight crust on the flesh side. Lemon juice is added early to brighten the flavor, combined with salt and pepper for seasoning. Covered, the salmon cooks partially through before the heat is lowered to add a glaze made from maple syrup, barbecue sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. The skillet is covered again to allow the sauce to thicken and coat the salmon while it finishes cooking.
The result is salmon with a juicy, tender center and a flavorful glaze that provides a harmonious mix of tangy, sweet, and savory notes. The lemon juice and simple seasoning complement the richer sauce, and cooking in a covered skillet helps meld flavors without drying the fish.
Serving the salmon immediately ensures the glaze remains pleasantly sticky and the fish warm. The dish works well as a main course and can be paired with simple sides to balance the bold flavors. Leftover salmon can be refrigerated for up to two days while maintaining quality.
Ingredients
- 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 salmon about 6 ounces each with skin on, fillets
- lemon juice juice of 1 small/medium lemon
- salt or lemon pepper or a pepper blend, to taste
- black pepper or lemon pepper or a pepper blend, to taste
- maple syrup about 3 tablespoons
- barbecue sauce about 3 tablespoons
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Place olive oil in skillet and heat over medium-high heat.
- When oil is warm, add the salmon to sear it with skin-side up (flesh side down).
- Squeeze the lemon juice over the top
- Evenly sprinkle with salt and pepper, to taste.
- Cover skillet and cook for about 6 minutes, or until fish has a nice sear and is about 80 to 90 percent done.
- Uncover skillet, lower heat to medium, and squirt in the maple syrup, barbeque sauce, and Worcestershire.
- Cover skillet and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until sauce has thickened some, is bubbly, and salmon is cooked through and done.
- Plate the salmon, top with remaining glaze from skillet if desired, and serve immediately.
Notes
- For best flavor and texture, serve the salmon warm and fresh from the skillet.
- Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to two days.
