Skillet Green Bean Casserole
Description
The casserole starts with butter-sautéed diced white onion and minced garlic cooked until soft and aromatic. Canned green beans are added along with cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and pepper, stirred gently and heated through to blend flavors and create a creamy texture. Half of the French fried onions are stirred in, and the rest used as a topping before moving the skillet to the oven for a short broil, which crisps and lightly browns the onions on top.
This method yields a warm, creamy casserole with tender green beans and a contrasting crunchy topping. Using a cast iron skillet allows seamless transition from stovetop to oven for broiling. If a cast iron skillet is unavailable, a regular skillet can be used and broiling skipped, though the topping won’t brown as vibrantly.
Best served fresh, leftover casserole stores well in the refrigerator up to 5 days in an airtight container. Allowing it to sit a few minutes after broiling lets the casserole set before serving. This dish complements roasted or grilled main courses and is a classic side for holiday meals.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1/2 white onion finely diced
- 2 tsp garlic minced
- 2 cans green beans 14.5 oz each - drained, cut
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup 10.5 oz each
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 can French fried onions 6 oz
Instructions
- In a large cast iron skillet, melt the butter over medium high heat. Then add the diced onions and sauté until the onions are translucent. Then add in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minutes until the garlic is aromatic.
- Then add in the green beans, cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt and pepper. Gently stir and cook until the green beans are heated through (2-3 minutes) and all the ingredients are combined.
- Then stir in half of the French fried onions.
- Then top the casserole with the remaining French fried onions.
- Move the pan to the oven and then broil for 2-3 minutes to brown the top of the casserole (watch closely to make sure that the top does not burn). Remove the casserole from the oven, allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes and then it’s ready to serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Storing leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator lasts up to 5 days.
- A cast iron skillet allows cooking from stovetop to oven for broiling; if unavailable, use a regular skillet and skip broiling.
