Sloppy Joe Casserole
Description
This casserole starts by browning ground beef together with finely chopped onions and green bell pepper to build a flavorful base. The meat is combined with a sauce of tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, Worcestershire, chili powder, and herbs to create a balanced tangy and slightly smoky mixture. The sauce is seasoned with salt, sugar, oregano, and pepper to round out the taste.
The mixture is transferred to an oven-safe skillet or dish and topped with a single layer of frozen tater tots. The casserole is baked uncovered at a high temperature until the tots are crisp and browned. Optional shredded cheddar cheese added in the final minutes melts over the top for added richness. Fresh parsley can be sprinkled as garnish for color.
This hearty casserole provides a warm and filling meal, suitable for dinner with a simple salad or vegetable side. The combination of tender, spiced meat and golden crunchy tots delivers satisfying textures and flavors in one skillet.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 large yellow onion finely chopped
- 1 large green bell pepper finely chopped
- 15 ounces tomato sauce no salt added
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon oregano dried
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- 32 ounces tater tots 1 package, frozen
- 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded (optional)
- parsley finely chopped, for garnish, fresh
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Using a large 12-inch oven-safe skillet, brown the ground beef with the onions and the bell pepper over medium-high heat. Cook until the meat is fully cooked, about 10 minutes, breaking up the meat up as it cooks.
- Add all of the remaining ingredients except the tater tots and stir well to combine.
- Arrange the tater tots in a single layer on top of the sloppy joe mixture in the pan.
- Bake uncovered for 25 minutes the tater tots are cooked and golden brown. Carefully sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese all over the tater tot and bake for another 5 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- Carefully remove from the oven and serve warm. I sprinkle a little parsley on top for garnish.
