Sloppy Joe Dip
Description
The dip begins by browning extra lean ground beef in an oven-safe skillet, then cooking down onions and bell peppers until tender. Garlic is added for aroma before sprinkling flour to thicken. A sauce of ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and beef broth simmers until thickened. Velveeta and half of the cheddar cheese are stirred in to melt smoothly. The remaining cheddar is sprinkled on top, and the dish is finished under a broiler for a golden cheese crust.
Sloppy Joe Dip offers a familiar sweet, tangy, and savory flavor profile turned into a creamy, spreadable form. It is practical for gatherings or casual snacks served with baguette slices or crackers.
Ground turkey can replace beef for a leaner option. Leftover dip stores well refrigerated up to three days and can be reheated by baking or microwaving. The dip is also freezer-friendly for up to three months; thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.
Ingredients
- 1½ pounds ground beef extra lean
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 1 medium green bell pepper diced
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
- 1 teaspoon black pepper or to taste
- 1 cup beef broth low sodium
- 4 ounces Velveeta cheese
- 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
Instructions
- Cook the beef. Add the ground beef to an oven safe skillet and cook over medium-high heat, stirring often and breaking the beef apart as you go, until the beef is no longer pink.
- Add onion and pepper. To the same skillet add the onion and bell pepper. Stir occasionally and cook until the onion is softened and translucent, 3-4 minutes.
- Add the garlic. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until aromatic.
- Cook and thicken beef mixture. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and cook while stirring, for another minute. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and beef broth to the skillet and stir well. Turn the heat down to medium heat, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thick, about 20 minutes.
- Stir in some cheese. Stir in the Velveeta and 1 cup of the cheddar cheese and cook until the cheese melts.
- Finish and broil. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese over the meat mixture. Place the skillet under the broiler for about 5 minutes until the cheese melts and browns. The dip should be hot and bubbly.
- Garnish and serve. Garnish with some chopped parsley and serve immediately.
Notes
- Use ground turkey instead of beef for a leaner dip option.
- Save half the cooked meat mixture before adding cheese to make classic sloppy joes as well.
- Serve with toasted baguette slices for dipping.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat in oven or microwave.
- Freeze cooled dip in an airtight container for up to 3 months; thaw in refrigerator before reheating.
