Sloppy Joes

Report
Sloppy Joes are a hearty sandwich made with ground lean beef simmered in a sweet and tangy sauce featuring ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and spices. The beef mixture is cooked with onions until browned, then gently simmered to meld the flavors before being spooned onto toasted hamburger buns. These sandwiches offer a moist, flavorful filling with a balanced savory and slightly sweet profile.

Description

This Sloppy Joes recipe starts by melting butter and cooking lean ground beef with chopped onion until fully browned and crumbled, with any excess grease drained off. The preparation continues by adding ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, red wine vinegar, chili powder, salt, and pepper to build a rich, tangy, and slightly sweet sauce. The mixture simmers over low heat for 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to develop and the sauce to thicken.

To serve, hamburger buns are optionally buttered and toasted under a broiler for a crisp surface, then filled generously with the warm meat mixture. These sandwiches are ideal for a casual meal and provide a satisfying combination of textures—the tender meat with the toasted bun.

The prepared meat mixture can be cooled and frozen in a suitable container for up to two months. When ready to eat, thaw thoroughly in the refrigerator and reheat in a skillet over medium-high heat until hot throughout.
