Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 lb. ground beef 85% - 90% lean, lean
  • ½ green bell pepper seeded and finely diced
  • ½ yellow onion finely chopped, medium
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 Tablespoon tomato paste
  • cup ketchup
  • cup water
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar honey or coconut sugar
  • ½ Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • ¾ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper ground
  • 4 Hamburger Bun

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add ground beef and brown, breaking it up with spatula into crumbles as it cooks, about 5 minutes, or until no longer pink. Transfer to a colander to drain.
  2. Add chopped onion and bell pepper to the same skillet and cook 2-3 minutes, until soft. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  3. Add tomato paste, ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, red pepper flakes (if using), and black pepper. Add beef back to the skillet and stir well to combine.
  4. Cook over medium heat for about 5 - 10 minutes, until mixture has thickened to your liking. Remove from heat and serve over buns.

Notes

  • Use a lean ground beef so that your Sloppy Joes aren't too greasy. Drain the beef once cooked to remove excess fat.
  • This recipe is traditionally made with a green bell pepper, but you can use any color.
  • Dice the pepper and onion finely so that it mixes well with the ground beef.
  • If making ahead, let cool fully before storing.
