Sloppy Joes
Description
This Sloppy Joes recipe starts by sautéing chopped yellow onion and red bell pepper in olive oil until softened. Ground lean beef is then added and browned, with garlic and a blend of chili powder, paprika, and ground mustard incorporated to build flavor.
After draining excess fat, the mixture is simmered with tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and a touch of hickory smoke flavor. If needed, water or broth is added to reach desired consistency. The result is a well-seasoned meat sauce with a balanced blend of smoky, tangy, and savory notes.
The mixture is served hot spooned onto hamburger buns for sandwiches. This hearty filling pairs well with simple sides like coleslaw, grilled corn, or potato chips for a casual meal.
Ground turkey may be used instead of beef but avoid using very lean options to maintain moisture. Use ketchup without corn syrup if preferred for a less sweet profile.

Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a 12-inch non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and bell pepper, saute until nearly tender, about 6 minutes. Scoot to one far side of the pan.
- Crumble in beef, let sear until browned on bottom, about 2 - 3 minutes. Then turn and start to break up beef and toss with peppers and onions, continue to cook 2 - 3 minutes or until nearly cooked through.
- Drain fat from beef. Add garlic, chili powder, paprika, mustard and season with salt and pepper to taste and cook beef through, about 1 minute, tossing occasionally.
- Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire, smoke flavor. Reduce heat and simmer until heated through, about 2 minutes. Thin the mixture with splashes of water, beef broth or chicken broth as needed.
- Serve warm in hamburger buns.
Notes
- Ground turkey can substitute ground beef; avoid very lean turkey for better texture.
- Opt for corn syrup-free ketchup to reduce sweetness if desired.
- Serve with grilled corn, coleslaw, chips, pickle spears, or potato salad for a complete meal.
