Sloppy Joes
Description
This Sloppy Joes recipe starts by browning ground beef seasoned simply with salt and pepper, then cooking down chopped onions and garlic to soften and flavor the meat. Tomato sauce, ketchup, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and garlic powder are incorporated to form a rich and tangy sauce that simmers to meld flavors and thicken slightly.
The final mixture is warm, slightly thick, and well-seasoned with a balance of sweetness, acidity, and umami. Serving the beef mixture on toasted hamburger buns adds texture contrast and helps contain the moist filling. This sandwich offers a satisfying and straightforward casual meal experience.
This recipe is adaptable with variations like adding vegetables, changing sauces, or swapping meats. It can be made ahead and stored refrigerated or frozen for convenience. Reheating is easy on the stovetop. Suggested side dishes include salads, roasted vegetables, potato-based sides, or fries to round out the meal.

- Try Hawaiian Sloppy Joes by substituting extra BBQ sauce for ketchup and adding crushed pineapple.
- Asian-style variations include adding ground ginger and hoisin sauce, plus crunchy additions like cucumber or water chestnuts.
