Slow Cooker Apple Butter

Slow Cooker Apple Butter combines chunks of apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, vanilla, and optional pumpkin pie spice, slow-cooked until tender and pureed into a smooth, thick spread. The slow cooking softens the apples and melds spices for a richly flavored apple butter that’s easy to make at home. This versatile spread works well on toast, biscuits, pancakes, or served alongside pork dishes.

Description

Slow Cooker Apple Butter is made by cooking large chunks of apples slowly with brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, vanilla, and optional pumpkin pie spice. The long, low heat breaks down the apples until soft, then the mixture is pureed to a smooth consistency. Finally, it is cooked uncovered on high heat to reduce moisture and thicken the butter. The finished apple butter is a smooth, spiced spread with a balanced sweetness and warmth from the spices that complements breakfast items and savory meats alike.

The rich texture comes from the pureed apples combined with brown sugar and spices, while slow cooking helps intensify the apple flavor without added preservatives. It provides a comforting and natural way to enjoy concentrated apple flavor year-round.

Serve this apple butter spread on warm toast, fresh biscuits, or pancakes. It also pairs nicely with pork as a fruit complement. Store leftovers in airtight containers to keep refrigerated for future meals or snacks.

This recipe allows some flexibility in apple variety and sugar amount, so you can tailor sweetness or spice levels. Optional pumpkin pie spice can add depth in autumn-inspired versions. The slow cooker method frees you from constant attention while developing a deeply flavored apple spread.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 5 pounds apple cut into chunks
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice optional

Instructions

  1. Slice apples into large pieces, removing any brusies as you go. Place apples in the bottom of a 4, 5 or 6 quart slow cooker.
  2. Add brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, vanilla and optional pumpkin pie spice to the slow cooker. Stir until well mixed with the apples.
  3. Cook the apples on low for 8-10 hours.
  4. Puree the soft apples using an immersion hand blender or transfer the ingredients to a food processor. Blend until smooth.
  5. Place apple mixture back in the slow cooker. Cook on high for one hour uncovered or until thick to your liking. This allows the apple butter to thicken further and for some of the water to cook off further.
  6. Allow the apple butter to cool, then enjoy on toast, biscuits, pancakes, with pork and more! Store extra in airtight containers.

Notes

  • Use 5 to 6 pounds of apples; the type affects color and flavor, with Honeycrisp providing a lighter butter.
  • Sugar amount can be adjusted or substituted with maple syrup to taste for a less sweet version.
  • This recipe yields approximately 4 to 5 cups of apple butter.
