Slow Cooker Beef Ribs
Description
The recipe starts with beef back ribs separated into individual ribs and seasoned with salt, pepper, or seasoning salt. They are arranged in a slow cooker and topped with barbecue sauce and water to create a moist cooking environment. The ribs are cooked on low for 7-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours until the meat becomes tender enough to pull away from the bone easily.
After slow cooking, the ribs are transferred to a foil-lined baking sheet and brushed generously with more barbecue sauce. Broiling them for several minutes caramelizes the sauce, creating a sticky, flavorful glaze with slightly charred edges. This finishing step adds texture contrast atop the tender ribs.
The ribs yield a hearty, tender meat dish suitable for occasions where hands-on carving and bold barbecue flavors are appreciated. The cooking liquid left in the slow cooker can be collected and chilled to separate fat for disposal instead of pouring down the drain, which helps manage excess grease.
Ingredients
- 3-5 pounds beef back ribs
- seasoning salt or salt and pepper
- 2 cups barbecue sauce divided plus more as needed
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- If your ribs came in a rack, slice them apart so you have individual ribs. Sprinkle each with your favorite seasoning salt or salt and pepper.
- Layer the ribs in your slow cooker and top with 1 1/2 cups of the BBQ sauce and 1 cup of water. Cook on low for 7-8 hours, high for 3-4. The ribs are ready for the next step when you can easily pull the meat apart with a fork.
- Transfer ribs to a foil-lined baking sheet. Brush them generously with the remaining 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce. Broil for 5-8 minutes, until sauce is caramelized and sticky.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Separate fat from the cooking liquid by chilling it in a container; discard solidified fat instead of pouring down the drain.
- Broil ribs after slow cooking to caramelize the barbecue sauce and add texture.
- Season ribs well before slow cooking to build flavor inside the meat.
