Slow Cooker Cabbage

Report
Slow Cooker Cabbage uses chopped cabbage, bacon, onion, garlic, and chicken broth cooked together until tender over several hours. The bacon and its rendered fat add smoky flavor and richness, while the chicken broth softens the cabbage to a comforting texture. This hands-off recipe allows the flavors to meld slowly, resulting in a hearty side dish or light main. It can also be made vegetarian by omitting the bacon and using butter instead of bacon grease.

Description

Slow Cooker Cabbage starts with chopped cabbage placed into a slow cooker along with cooked, crumbled bacon and sautéed onions. The bacon is browned with onions first to render fat and develop flavor, then the fat and cooked onion and bacon are added to the slow cooker, along with minced garlic, salt, pepper, and chicken broth. Slowly cooking on high heat for about 3 to 4 hours softens the cabbage and infuses it with the smoky, savory notes from the bacon.

The finished cabbage is tender and flavored through with the aroma of garlic, onion, and bacon grease. The slow cooker method requires minimal hands-on time and develops deep flavor with gradual heat. The broth helps to keep the cabbage moist and adds a light savory richness to the dish.

This dish can be served as a warm side alongside meats or as a comforting light meal. For a vegetarian option, omit the bacon and use butter instead of bacon grease to maintain richness. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.
