Slow Cooker Cabbage and Sausage

Slow Cooker Cabbage and Sausage is a hearty dish combining tender baby potatoes, onions, chopped cabbage, and smoked sausage cooked slowly in a seasoned broth. The ingredients meld together over hours, producing soft vegetables infused with sausage flavor and a modest savory seasoning. Finished with optional fresh parsley, this dish suits a comforting meal with simple preparation and hands-off cooking.

Description

This recipe layers bite-sized baby potatoes and chopped onion in the bottom of a slow cooker, followed by chopped cabbage seasoned with steak seasoning. Sliced smoked sausage is added on top along with chicken broth to provide cooking liquid. The slow cooker lid is placed to cook the ingredients on high for four hours or low for eight hours.

During the slow cooking, the potatoes become tender, the cabbage softens, and the sausage infuses the broth with smoky flavor. The dish is stirred at the end to combine flavors and is optionally garnished with fresh chopped parsley for a mild herbal contrast.

This preparation is convenient for those who want a cooked meal ready after several hours without active cooking. It pairs well as a main dish or a side alongside other dishes. Adjust seasoning after cooking to personal taste.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1.5 lb. baby potato $2.99
  • 1 yellow onion $0.32
  • 1/2 head cabbage $1.14, chopped, 5-6 cups
  • 2 tsp steak seasoning $0.20
  • 14 oz. smoked sausage $2.79
  • 2 cups chicken broth $0.26
  • 1 Tbsp parsley $0.10, chopped, optional garnish

Instructions

  1. Chop the onion into 1-inch pieces. Place the baby potatoes and onions in the bottom of a 5 quart or larger slow cooker.
  2. Chop the cabbage into 1-inch pieces. Add the cabbage and steak seasoning to the slow cooker.
  3. Slice the sausage into ½-inch thick rounds. Add the sausage to the slow cooker along with the chicken broth. Stir slightly to nestle the sausage down into the cabbage. It's okay if the broth does not cover all the ingredients.
  4. Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours.
  5. After 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low, stir to combine the ingredients. Taste and adjust the seasonings to your liking. Top with chopped parsley, if desired, then serve hot.
