Slow Cooker Creamed Spinach Recipe

Slow Cooker Creamed Spinach uses frozen chopped spinach cooked slowly with butter, onion, garlic, flour, milk, and spices to create a rich, creamy side dish. The mixture thickens over several hours until smooth and velvety with Parmesan cheese added at the end for savory depth. This preparation yields tender spinach in a warming creamy sauce with subtle nutmeg and cayenne accents, easy to prepare with minimal active cooking.

Description

This creamed spinach recipe begins by sautéing butter, chopped sweet onion, and minced garlic until softened, then adding flour to form a base roux. This mixture is placed into a slow cooker along with frozen spinach, milk, salt, nutmeg, white pepper, and cayenne pepper. The slow cooker gently thickens the sauce and fully cooks the spinach over 8 to 10 hours on low heat with occasional stirring. The finished dish is creamy and smooth, with a mild spice and nutmeg aroma. Parmesan cheese stirred in at the end enriches the flavor and adds a subtle texture contrast. This slow cooker method enables a hands-off approach while developing deep, mellow flavors in the creamed spinach.

As an alternative, the recipe notes include stovetop instructions where all ingredients except cheese are cooked in a deep sauté pan, then simmered to thicken before finishing with Parmesan cheese. This option allows for faster preparation when slow cooking is not preferred.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 36 ounces spinach four 9-ounce boxes, frozen, chopped
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 large onion peeled and chopped, sweet
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 3/4 cups milk whole
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese grated

Instructions

  1. Place the butter, chopped onions, and garlic in a skillet. Set over medium heat and sauté to soften, about 3-5 minutes. Stir in the flour and stir well to break up the clumps.
  2. Scoop the onion mixture into the crock of a large slow cooker. Add the frozen spinach, milk, salt, nutmeg, white pepper and cayenne pepper. Cover and turn on low.
  3. Slow cook for 8-10 hours until the mixture simmers and thickens. Stir every few hours. When ready to serve, stir in the Parmesan cheese. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For stovetop preparation, cook the onion and garlic in butter, then add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for 15-20 minutes until thickened before stirring in Parmesan cheese.
