Slow Cooker Glazed Ham
Description
The recipe begins by scoring the cooked ham to allow the glaze and steam to penetrate more effectively. Placing the ham in a slow cooker with a bit of water and cooking on low for several hours softens and warms the meat evenly. The glaze is prepared separately by simmering the brown sugar, honey, mustard, soda, and maple syrup to meld flavors and thicken slightly.
After discarding the liquid from the ham, pouring the glaze over and cooking further allows the sugars to form a sticky, flavorful coating without drying out the ham. The combination of sweet and smoky notes is balanced by the tangy mustard and subtle fizz from the soda. Serving slices of ham with the leftover glaze spooned on top adds moisture and richness.
Suitable for various ham sizes from small to large, the recipe notes doubling the glaze quantities for bigger roasts. This method is convenient for hands-off cooking while achieving a glaze that enhances the ham's flavor and texture.
Ingredients
- 1 ham any size will work as long as you have a slow cooker large enough for it, fully cooked
Glaze
- 1 ¼ cups brown sugar
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup brown mustard spicy
- ¾ cup Dr Pepper soda half of a can
- ¼ cup maple syrup
Instructions
- Score ham by using a sharp knife to cut lines into ham in a criss cross pattern. The lines only need to be about 1/8th of an inch deep. Fill slow cooker with about 1 inch of water. Place ham in slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours.
- 1 hour before serving, prepare the sauce. Whisk together all sauce ingredients in a medium sauce pan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to thicken for 5-10 minutes.
- Drain water and ham juices from slow cooker. Pour sauce over ham inside the slow cooker, being sure to cover the whole ham. Cover and cook another 30 minutes. Place ham on serving dish. Carve/slice the ham and spoon the remaining sauce from the slow cooker over the ham. Serve warm. Enjoy!
Notes
- This recipe accommodates hams ranging from very small (2 pounds) to large sizes suitable for big groups.
- For ham weights exceeding 7-8 pounds, doubling the glaze ingredients is recommended to ensure sufficient coverage and flavor.
