Slow Cooker Glazed Smoked Ham

This recipe prepares a fully cooked, spiral sliced ham slow-cooked with a sweet and smoky glaze made from butter, honey, liquid smoke, brown sugar, and warm spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. The slow cooking method helps the ham absorb the glaze flavors and become tender, with a final broil caramelizing the surface for a glossy finish. It's suited to a classic holiday or special meal.

Description

Slow Cooker Glazed Smoked Ham starts with a large, fully cooked spiral ham placed in a slow cooker. A glaze is made by combining melted butter, honey, liquid smoke, dark brown sugar, and warm spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. This mixture is spooned generously over the ham, particularly between the slices to infuse flavor deeply.

The ham is cooked on low heat for 4 to 5 hours, during which it bastes in its flavorful juices and the glaze penetrates the meat, enhancing its smoky-sweet character. If the ham is large, the slow cooker may need to be covered with foil so the lid fits securely, maintaining moisture.

After slow cooking, sprinkling additional brown sugar and briefly broiling the ham for about 5 minutes creates a caramelized, sticky crust. This step adds a pleasant texture contrast and a richer glaze finish, making the ham visually appealing and flavorful.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 pound ham fully cooked, spiral sliced

Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup butter unsalted, melted
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves

Instructions

  1. Place the ham inside a 6-8qt slow cooker.
  2. In a small bowl combine all the glaze ingredients and stir.
  3. Spoon the glaze all over the ham, if you are using a spiral ham, make sure to get the glaze between each slice.
  4. Slow cook the ham on LOW for 4-5 hours. Baste from time to time with the cooking liquids.
  5. If the ham is too large for the lid to close completely on the slow cooker, cover the slow cooker with aluminum foil and place the lid on top.
  6. Sprinkle with more brown sugar and broil for 5 minutes before serving.
