Slow Cooker Ham

Slow Cooker Ham is prepared by simmering a bone-in ham in a slow cooker with an apple juice-based glaze combining brown sugar and Dijon mustard. The slow, gentle cooking slowly infuses the ham with sweet and tangy flavors while keeping it moist and tender. This method suits large hams for gatherings or Sunday dinners.

Description

This Slow Cooker Ham recipe uses a 7 to 9 pound bone-in ham cooked low and slow in a slow cooker. The ham is placed cut-side down with apple juice in the base to keep it moist during cooking. A glaze made from brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and additional apple juice is whisked together to a runny paste and poured evenly over the ham. For spiral-cut hams, the glaze is worked into the slices.

Cooking low for 4 to 5 hours gently warms the ham and allows the glaze’s sweetness and mustard tang to permeate the meat. The low temperature prevents drying out, resulting in tender, juicy slices. After cooking, the ham is rested 10-15 minutes before slicing for serving.

This technique provides a hands-off way to prepare a festive ham with a balanced flavor combining sweet, tangy, and savory elements. It is straightforward enough for home cooks without extensive preparation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 7 to 9 pounds ham bone-in
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup apple juice

Instructions

  1. Place 7 to 9 pounds bone-in ham cut-side down in a 5 to 7-quart slow cooker. Pour 1/2 cup apple juice into the bottom of the slow cooker.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, and 1/4 cup apple juice. The mixture will have the consistency of a runny paste.
  3. Pour the glaze over the ham. If using a spiral ham, ensure glaze gets between the layers.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours.
  5. After 4-5 hours, or once the ham reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit, carefully remove it from the slow cooker. Allow the ham to rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
