Slow Cooker Kalua Pork
Description
Slow Cooker Kalua Pork uses a pork shoulder or a similar cut as the base, seasoned evenly with liquid smoke to simulate the smoky flavor of traditional cooking methods and Himalayan pink salt for seasoning. The roast is placed in a lightly greased slow cooker and cooked on a low setting between 8 to 12 hours, depending on size, until the pork is tender enough to shred.
The slow cooking process breaks down connective tissues in the pork, resulting in moist, tender meat with infused smoky saltiness from the seasonings. No additional liquid is added, relying on the pork’s own fat and the slow cooker’s environment to keep it moist.
This shredded pork can be served plain as a main dish or incorporated into meals such as rice bowls, tacos, or salads, providing a flavorful protein option. Its simplicity makes it adaptable to many culinary contexts without complex preparation.
Doubling the liquid smoke and salt is recommended when using a larger roast to maintain balanced seasoning. Leftover pork stores well in an airtight container refrigerated for up to a week, offering convenient leftovers or quick meal components.
Ingredients
- 1 pound pork shoulder or similar roast, size can vary a bit too, roast
- 1 tablespoon liquid smoke (you can find this in almost any grocery store)
