Slow Cooker Maple Brown Sugar Ham

A slow cooker ham fragranced with a brown sugar and pure maple syrup glaze, enhanced by pineapple juice, results in tender, sweet, and moist slices. The long, slow cooking method ensures the ham absorbs the glaze’s sweetness while staying juicy, suitable for holiday meals or a comforting family dinner.

Description

This recipe uses a bone-in or boneless spiral-cut ham cooked in a low-temperature slow cooker. The ham is rubbed evenly with dark brown sugar before pouring over maple syrup and pineapple juice, which combine to create a sweet, tangy glaze during the cooking process. Cooking low and slow over 4 to 5 hours allows the flavors to meld and the ham to become tender.

The ham is basted in its juices about an hour before serving to keep it moist and enhance the glaze’s shine. Resting after cooking helps redistribute juices for easier carving.

The sweet blend pairs well with traditional side dishes like mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or steamed greens, making it suitable for festive gatherings or special meals.

If your slow cooker runs hot, monitor cooking time closely to prevent overcooking or drying of the ham.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 7-8 pound ham bone-in or boneless, spiral-cut
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 cups pineapple juice

Instructions

  1. Use a 6-7 quart slow cooker. Unwrap the ham and discard flavor packet. Place the ham into the slow cooker stoneware, flat-side down. Rub brown sugar on all sides. Pour on maple syrup and pineapple juice.
  2. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours. An hour before serving, baste ham with the collected juices from the bottom of the slow cooker.
  3. When cooking is done, remove carefully and let it rest on a cutting board for 10 minutes before carving.

Notes

  • Reduce cooking time if your slow cooker tends to run hot to avoid overcooking the ham.
  • Let the ham rest for 10 minutes after cooking to allow juices to redistribute, making carving easier.
