Slow Cooker Pineapple Ham

This slow cooker pineapple ham is a spiral-cut ham cooked low and slow with a sweet and spiced glaze made from crushed pineapple, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. The pineapple juice and syrup keep the ham moist while imparting a warm, aromatic sweetness. The glaze is worked between the ham slices to flavor the meat thoroughly. The ham is cooked in a slow cooker for several hours, making it tender and convenient.

Description

The Slow Cooker Pineapple Ham begins with a large (8-10 pound) spiral-cut ham placed in a slow cooker coated lightly with cooking spray. The ham is patted dry and covered with crushed pineapple and its juice, then layered with a mixture combining brown sugar, maple syrup, and warm spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. The sweet-spicy glaze is poured over and worked between the slices for even flavor coverage.

The ham cooks on low for 3 to 4 hours (or high for 1 to 2 hours), during which the lid is lifted periodically to baste with its own juices, maintaining moisture. The long, slow cooking tenderizes the ham and allows the flavors to infuse fully. Once done, it is garnished with reserved pineapple before serving.

This preparation fits well for holiday meals or gatherings where a large glazed ham is desired without oven roasting. The slow cooker frees the cook from monitoring the ham continuously, while the combination of pineapple and maple syrup creates a balance of sweetness accented by aromatic spices. Reheating tips or freezing are not provided, but the moist cooking method suggests leftovers would retain flavor well.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8-10 pound ham spiraled
  • 1 can (20 ounce) pineapple crushed
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice

Instructions

  1. Lightly spray an 8 quart slow cooker with cooking spray.
  2. Pat dry the ham with paper towels, and then transfer it to the slow cooker.
  3. Pour over half the can of the crushed pineapple including all the juice. Reserve the rest of the pineapple for topping when the ham is served.
  4. In a bowl, mix the brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and all spice, add it over the ham. Scoop the mixture between the ham slices.
  5. Cook on low for 3-4 hours, or high 1-2 hours.
  6. During the cooking process, lift the lid a few times and using a ladle, pour the juices over the ham in order to keep it moist.
  7. Garnish with the remaining pineapple and serve.
