Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes
Description
Preparing Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes involves first browning extra lean ground beef in a pan to develop more depth through caramelization, then draining excess grease to prevent an overly greasy sauce. The browned beef is combined in a slow cooker with tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, prepared mustard, garlic and onion powders, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. The mixture simmers over several hours on low or high heat, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
Once ready, the sloppy joe filling is spooned onto hamburger buns, topped with a slice of yellow cheese. The savory and tangy meat sauce pairs well with the soft buns and melted cheese, making a satisfying and easy-to-serve meal.
Using beef with an 85/15 or leaner ratio is recommended to reduce grease. A cornstarch slurry can be added to thicken the sauce if desired. Letting ground beef reach room temperature before cooking promotes even browning.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 16 ounces tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Serve with:
- 6 Hamburger Bun
- 6 lices cheese yellow
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
- Next, place the ground beef in the pan and season it with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 6-8 minutes, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon until browned.
- Transfer to the slow cooker with the rest of the ingredients. Stir to combine.
- Cook on HIGH for 3 hours or LOW for 6 hours.
- Spoon the meat onto the hamburger buns, with a slice of cheese, then serve.
Notes
- Brown ground beef first to develop caramelized flavor and a better texture through the Maillard reaction.
- Use extra lean ground beef (85/15 or leaner) to avoid excess grease in the final dish.
- Drain grease after browning to keep the sloppy joes from becoming overly greasy.
- A cornstarch slurry can be added to thicken the sauce if needed during slow cooking.
- Allow ground beef to come to room temperature before cooking for more even browning.
