Slow Cooker Spiced Cranberry Apple Cider
Description
Slow Cooker Spiced Cranberry Apple Cider uses a base of apple juice and cranberry juice cocktail combined in a slow cooker. Orange slices and fresh ginger rounds provide fresh citrus and gingery warmth. Whole cloves are contained in a tea strainer to infuse aromatic spice without floating freely. Cinnamon sticks add a sweet, woody note. The medley slowly cooks on low for six hours or on high for three, allowing the juices and spices to meld.
The resulting cider is a warm, fragrant beverage with layers of fruitiness and spice. Slices of orange and fresh cranberries make a seasonal garnish when served. The gentle heat and infusion method yields a rich-tasting cider without resorting to alcoholic mixes.
This cider is suitable for holiday gatherings or cool weather parties. It can be started before guests arrive and kept warm on the slow cooker’s warm setting without overcooking. Using a tea strainer for cloves keeps the serving smooth and spice controlled, but if unavailable, the cloves can be left loose as they tend to settle to the bottom over time.
Ingredients
- 2 quarts apple juice $4.99, unfiltered or cider
- 1 quart cranberry juice $2.99, cocktail 100% juice
- 1 orange $0.33, small
- 3- inches ginger $0.30, fresh
- 1 Tbsp cloves $0.60
- 1.25 oz bottle cinnamon sticks $1.25, 5-6 small sticks
GARNISHES (optional)
- 1 orange $0.33, small
- 1 cup cranberries $0.70, fresh
Instructions
- Combine the apple juice and cranberry juice cocktail in a 4-6 quart slow cooker.
- Slice the orange. Peel and slice the ginger into rounds. Place the cloves in a tea baller or tea strainer*. Add the orange slices, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon sticks to the slow cooker with the juice mix.
- Place a lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for six hours, or high for three (you can start this mid-day before your party). Once the party has begun, turn the heat to warm to keep the brew nice and hot without over cooking.
- Serve each much with a half slice of orange and a few fresh cranberries, if desired.
Notes
- Whole cloves placed in a tea strainer prevent stray cloves in the cider but can be freely added if a strainer is unavailable, as they will sink during cooking.
