Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup

Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup uses dried split peas, ham hocks, diced vegetables, and chicken stock simmered low and slow to produce a hearty, thick soup. The ham imparts a smoky depth, while celery, carrots, onion, and seasonings provide savory balance. The soup offers a comforting texture with tender peas broken down into a creamy base punctuated by bits of ham and vegetables.

Description

This recipe combines dried split peas with diced yellow onion, minced garlic, thickly sliced carrots, sliced celery, bay leaves, poultry seasoning, and ham hocks in a slow cooker along with chicken stock. The mixture simmers on low for 4-5 hours, allowing the peas to soften fully and flavors to meld. The ham hocks impart a smoky, meaty flavor as they cook, which is later shredded and added back to the soup, enriching its texture and taste.

The slow cooker method yields a thick, hearty soup where the peas break down almost completely, creating a creamy consistency without added cream. Seasonings like salt, pepper, and poultry seasoning round out the savory profile. The vegetables retain some texture, giving variety to each spoonful.

Serve this soup with crusty bread or alongside a salad for a warming, satisfying lunch or dinner. Adjust thickness by adding reserved chicken stock if needed. Removing the ham hocks before shredding and discarding bones ensures a rustic yet smooth finish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb. split peas no need to pre-soak them, dried
  • 1 yellow onion diced
  • 3 garlic minced, cloves
  • 2 celery sliced, stalks
  • 1 cup carrots thickly sliced
  • 2 bay leaf
  • 2-3 ham hocks
  • 4-5 cups chicken stock reserve 1 cup as needed
  • salt as needed
  • black pepper as needed
  • 1/4 tsp. poultry seasoning

Instructions

  1. Add split peas, onion, garlic, carrot, celery, bay leaves, and poultry seasoning to slow cooker.
  2. Nestle the ham hocks on top and pour 4 cups of chicken stock over everything. Season liberally with salt and pepper. Stir to combine and put the lid on.
  3. Cook on low for 4-5 hours.
  4. If the soup seems too thick, add some of the reserved chicken stock until your desired texture is obtained.
  5. Remove ham hocks from slow cooker. When they have cooled enough to handle them, remove the meat from them and add the meat to the soup in slow cooker. Discard ham hocks once you have removed the meat from them.
  6. If needed, add salt & pepper and serve with a side salad or some crusty bread. Enjoy!
