Slow Cooker Swiss Steak

Slow Cooker Swiss Steak uses flour-dredged round steaks browned in butter, then slow-cooked with mushrooms, onions, celery, condensed cream of mushroom soup, and beef broth. The result is tender meat in a thick, flavorful mushroom gravy. This hands-off method yields comfort food that pairs well with mashed potatoes.

Description

This recipe begins by seasoning and dredging medium-thin round steaks in a mixture of flour, black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder, creating a seasoned crust. The steaks are browned in butter over medium-high heat to develop flavor and texture before transfer to the slow cooker.

Vegetables including sliced onions, mushrooms, and celery are added around the meat. Pouring a mixture of condensed cream of mushroom soup and beef broth over the top creates a base for a rich gravy as the dish cooks slowly. Cooking times range from 5-6 hours on high to 8-9 hours on low, until the steaks become fork-tender and infused with the mushroom sauce.

Serving the Swiss steak with mashed potatoes allows soaking up the thickened gravy, making a hearty meal. Parsley can be added as a garnish to provide a fresh contrast. This recipe offers a convenient way to prepare a classic comfort dish with tender beef and savory flavors.
