Slow Cooker Turkey in Gravy

This Slow Cooker Turkey in Gravy recipe uses a seasoned turkey breast slow-cooked with a simple herb rub and aluminum foil props to promote self-basting. The method helps retain moisture and develop tenderness over several hours, followed by adding prepared gravy to enrich the cooking liquid. The final shredded turkey, combined with ample gravy, creates a versatile dish that can be served over mashed potatoes, rice, or sandwiches.

Description

Slow Cooker Turkey in Gravy begins with a 12-pound turkey breast seasoned with sea salt, cracked black pepper, oregano, cilantro, rosemary, and paprika. The turkey is arranged in the slow cooker using foil balls as supports to keep it elevated, which allows the bird to baste in its own juices, preserving moisture and flavor as it cooks covered on high heat. After two hours, the foil is removed and prepared gravy is added to the pot, allowing the turkey to cook further and absorb the rich flavors of the gravy.

The cooking process results in an internal temperature of 175°F and an opaque white, fully cooked turkey breast. The skin is removed before shredding the meat with forks for ease of serving. The bones and carcass are discarded to leave just the shredded turkey in a flavorful gravy base.

This dish works well topped on mashed potatoes, inside sandwiches, or spooned over rice, offering a hearty and moist turkey with a herbaceous gravy. Additional gravy is simmered in the slow cooker until ready to serve, ensuring a warm, saucy dish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 turkey breast 12 lb
  • 1 tbsp sea salt Celtic variety
  • 1 tbsp black pepper cracked
  • 1 tbsp oregano fresh or dried
  • 1 tbsp cilantro dried
  • 1 tbsp rosemary fresh or dried
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 2 8-10 oz gravy or two packets of gravy, made per their instructions, divided, ready-made cartons

Instructions

  1. In a large crockpot, drizzle oil at the bottom to prevent sticking.
  2. Season turkey but rubbing herbs onto the skin.
  3. Roll up two sheets of aluminum foil into balls.
  4. Place the balls of foil on each side of the turkey, propping it up so the bony cavity is at the bottom and the fat is up top (this helps baste the bird in it's own juices).
  5. Cover and cook on high two hours.
  6. Remove foil.
  7. Add one package (or packet's worth) of gravy.
  8. Add cover back and cook another two hours.
  9. When turkey is 175 degrees internally, and a bright opaque white, remove skin and shred with forks.
  10. Remove bones and carcass from slow cooker.
  11. Add additional gravy to slow cooker and let simmer on low until ready to be served.
  12. Great over mashed potatoes, in sandwiches, over rice, or on it's own!
