Slow Cooker Unsweetened Applesauce Recipe

This Slow Cooker Unsweetened Applesauce is made by cooking peeled, cored, and cubed apples with water, lemon juice, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt in a slow cooker until soft. The mixture is blended to a smooth consistency without added sugar for a natural apple flavor.

Description

The Slow Cooker Unsweetened Applesauce Recipe uses peeled and cored apples layered in a slow cooker with water, lemon juice to preserve color and add brightness, cinnamon sticks for warm spice, a pinch of nutmeg, and salt for balance. Cooking on high heat for 3 to 4 hours softens the apples sufficiently for pureeing into a smooth sauce.

This preparation avoids added sugars, highlighting the natural sweetness of the apples enhanced by the earthy spices. Pureeing can be done with a high-powered blender or a hand mixer, depending on the desired texture.

The sauce stores well refrigerated in glass jars up to 5 days or frozen in airtight containers for up to 3 months, making it convenient for batch preparation and later use as a snack or dessert accompaniment.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 pounds apple cored and cut into small cubes - 6-8 apples depending on their size, peeled
  • ½ cup of water
  • lemon juice of ½ lemon
  • 2 cinnamon stick
  • pinch salt
  • pinch nutmeg freshly squeezed, ground

Instructions

  1. Layer sliced apples in the bowl of a slow cooker.
  2. Pour in the water and lemon juice.
  3. Add in the cinnamon sticks, salt, and ground nutmeg. Give it a gentlestir.
  4. Cook in high heat setting up to 3-4 hours. Depending on your slow cooker the timing may change. However, I recommend keeping a close eye after the 3-hour mark. I also recommend giving it a stir a few times during the cooking process.
  5. Transfer the apples into a high power blender and puree until smooth. Alternatively, you can use a hand mixer, but it might take longer for it to be completely pureed.
  6. Store in glass Mason jars. They will keep fresh up to 5 days in the fridge. If you prefer to freeze your applesauce, store in airtight plastic containers and freeze up to 3 months.
