Slow Cooker Warm Apple Cinnamon Spiced Wine
Description
This recipe combines five cups of apple cider with red wine and aromatic spices—cinnamon sticks, cloves, and ground nutmeg—in a slow cooker or on the stovetop. A peeled orange contributes zest and fresh juice, which enhances the citrus brightness in the drink. Optional sliced apple adds texture and subtle sweetness.
In the slow cooker method, the mixture is cooked on high for an hour and then kept warm on low or warm setting after adding spiced rum and apples. The stovetop method involves simmering the mixture for about 30 minutes before adding rum. Serving warm in mugs, garnished with apple slices or cinnamon sticks, presents an inviting drink with layers of sweet fruit, spice, and the depth of wine and rum.
Ingredients
- 5 cups apple cider
- 1 red wine
- 4 cinnamon stick
- 4 cloves
- 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1 orange
- 1 apple sliced or diced (optional)
- 1/2 cup spiced rum
Instructions
Slow Cooker Instructions
- Add apple cider, wine, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg and cloves to slow cooker.
- Peel a clean, washed orange and throw the orange peel in the slow cooker. Cut the peeled orange in half and squeeze the juice into the liquids in the slow cooker.
- Put the lid on and turn to "high" for an hour.
- Reduce the temperature to either "low" or "keep warm", add rum and diced apple, if desired. It can sit with the lid on or off for hours or serve after the rum and apples have been added.
Stove Instructions
- To make this recipe on the stove instead of a slow cooker, add everything but the rum to a large sauce pan or Dutch oven, bring to a boil. Simmer for about 30 minutes, then add the rum. Serve in mugs and garnish with apple slices and/or cinnamon sticks.
