Smoked Barbecue Pit Beans

Smoked Barbecue Pit Beans combine several varieties of beans with bacon, bell peppers, jalapeño, onions, and barbecue meats for a rich, smoky side dish. The beans are cooked slowly in a smoker, absorbing deep barbecue flavors and spices. The texture is hearty and saucy, complementing grilled or smoked meats perfectly.

Description

This Smoked Barbecue Pit Beans recipe blends baked beans, seasoned black beans, and ranch style beans with aromatics like diced onions, bell peppers, jalapeño, and minced garlic. Thick-cut bacon is cooked and rendered to add smoky fat and flavor. The vegetables are sautéed in the bacon grease to soften and develop aroma.

All ingredients, including molasses, spicy barbecue sauce, chicken broth, and barbecue meats like brisket or pork, are combined in a foil pan. Cooking the mixture low and slow in a smoker between 225-250°F for 1-3 hours allows the flavors to meld and infuses a wood smoke essence. Beans become tender and well-seasoned, with a glossy barbecue sauce coating.

This dish serves as a classic barbecue side suitable for cookouts or gatherings, providing a hearty, smoky complement to grilled meats. Stirring during the cook ensures even cooking and flavor distribution.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 28 Ounce baked beans
  • 15 Ounce black beans seasoned
  • 15 Ounce Ranch Style Beans
  • 1 Cup chicken broth
  • 2 garlic minced, cloves
  • 2 bell pepper Red, Yellow, or Green
  • 1 jalapeño Increase to 2 for spicier beans
  • 1 yellow onion diced
  • 4 lices Bacon thick cut
  • ¼ Cup molasses
  • 1 Cup barbecue sauce spicy
  • 1.5 Cups BBQ meats Chopped. Brisket, Chicken and/or Pork
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ancho powder or other Chili Powder

Instructions

  1. Prep the veggies by dicing the onions, bell peppers and jalapeno and mincing or finely chopping the garlic. Rinse and drain the black beans.
  2. Cut the thick cut bacon strips into roughly ½-inch pieces.
  3. Heat a pan or skillet over medium high heat and cook the bacon to desired doneness. Remove the bacon from the pan but leave the bacon grease.
  4. Reduce heat to medium, then cook the onion and peppers until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic the last minute of cooking.
  5. In a foil pan or baking dish combine the beans, molasses, cooked veggies, bacon, spices and seasonings, chicken broth and BBQ sauce. Stir to combine. If available, add the BBQ meats to the beans or if they are cooking at the same time they can be added at the end of the cook.
  6. Heat your smoker to 225-250 degrees and place the pan of beans on the smoker. Cook for 1-3 hours depending on how smoky you want the beans. Stir the beans about every 30 minutes.
  7. When ready to eat, remove from the smoker and mix in the BBQ meats, if you did not do this at the beginning of the cook, and enjoy with your favorite BBQ meats.
