Smoked Chicken Breast Recipe
Description
The Smoked Chicken Breast Recipe begins with boneless skinless chicken breasts coated lightly with avocado oil to help the seasoning adhere. A spice rub combining brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, and black pepper delivers a balanced savory and slightly sweet profile.
Smoking at a low temperature allows gradual cooking, infusing the chicken with smoke flavor while keeping it moist. The recommended internal temperature of 165ºF ensures food safety and optimal juiciness. After smoking, resting the meat for at least 10 minutes helps redistribute juices for tender slices.
The smoked chicken breast is versatile, suitable for serving whole with sides or chopping for other dishes. The use of a dry rub emphasizes flavor penetration without overwhelming the natural chicken taste.
Brining is not advised here to preserve texture. Alternatives for the oil binder include mustard. Store-bought rubs can be a convenient shortcut without changing the recipe’s outcome significantly.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds chicken breast boneless skinless
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil
Rub Ingredients
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper ground
Instructions
- Preheat the smoker to 225ºF.
- Coat all the chicken breasts with avocado oil. You shouldn't need more than 2 tablespoons. The oil is simply acting as a binder for the seasoning.
- To a mixing bowl, combine all of the rub ingredients.
- Generously season all sides of the chicken breasts with the rub mixture. Make sure they are coated on all sides.
- Once the smoker has preheated, add the chicken breast directly to the grates of the smoker.
- Smoke the chicken for 1 hour or until the internal temperature reaches 165ºF at the thickest part. You may need longer depending on the thickness of your chicken breast.
- Remove the chicken from the smoker and allow it to rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Avoid brining chicken breasts before smoking to maintain ideal texture.
- Store-bought rubs can replace the homemade seasoning as a convenient alternative.
- Mustard can be used in place of avocado oil as a binder for the rub.
