Smoked Chicken Wings

Smoked Chicken Wings are seasoned with BBQ spice rub and slow-cooked in a smoker using fruitwood chips until tender and smoky. A final broil crisps the skin, and a coating of barbecue sauce adds sticky glaze and rich flavor perfect for casual gatherings.

Description

These Smoked Chicken Wings are prepared by first coating party-style wing segments with a BBQ spice rub. They are then smoked at 250°F using apple, cherry, or hickory wood chips, which infuse the meat with a smoky aroma while cooking the wings gently for about two hours. The slow smoking method ensures a tender interior and a pronounced smoky flavor.

Optionally, the wings can be finished under the broiler for 3-4 minutes to crisp up the skin, giving a textural contrast between the crispy exterior and juicy meat inside. Finally, brushing the wings with barbecue sauce adds a sweet and tangy glaze that complements the smoky seasoning. These wings work well as a finger food for parties or casual meals.

Choosing party-style wings means the wings are already segmented, simplifying preparation. They can be served plain or with a dipping sauce like ranch if desired.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 lbs chicken wings party style
  • 3 tablespoons bbq spice rub or your favorite store bought rub, homemade
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce or your favorite store bought BBQ sauce, homemade

Instructions

  1. Preheat your smoker to 250 degrees F. Load the smoker with apple wood, cherry wood or hickory chips.
  2. Coat the chicken wings with the spice rub and place in the smoker.
  3. Cook for 2 hours, refilling wood as needed, or until the internal temperature of the chicken wings registers 165 degrees F with a thermometer.
  4. Transfer the chicken wings to a sheet pan.
  5. Optional: Preheat the broiler. Place the sheet pan of wings under the broiler and cook for 3-4 minutes or until skin is crispy.
  6. Brush the wings with the BBQ sauce and serve.

Notes

  • Use party-style chicken wings already segmented for easier prep; alternatively, cut full wings into pieces yourself.
  • If desired, serve the wings with a dip such as ranch to complement the smoky, spicy flavors.
  • Maintain the smoker temperature and replenish wood chips as needed to ensure consistent smoke throughout the cooking process.
