Smoked Salmon Dip

This smoked salmon dip combines smoked salmon or trout with cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, and fresh dill for a creamy, tangy spread. The addition of lemon zest and juice adds brightness while garlic brings subtle pungency. It’s smooth yet slightly textured from the salmon pieces, making it rich and flavorful. Served at room temperature, it pairs well with crackers like melba toasts or mini crostinis and can be a savory addition at parties or as a snack.

Description

Smoked Salmon Dip balances the smoky flavor of the salmon with creamy ingredients like cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Fresh dill and garlic contribute herbal and aromatic notes, while lemon zest and juice brighten the overall taste. Processing the mixture until fairly smooth creates a thick, spreadable consistency with small salmon flakes remaining, giving pleasant texture. Chilled and served at room temperature, it complements mild crackers well.

The dip works well as an appetizer or snack, suitable for serving alongside crispy toasts or crackers. The creamy base and delicate fish flavor make it a versatile option that can be portioned easily for small or larger gatherings.

Storage depends on the smoked salmon’s shelf life; the dip firms when refrigerated so bringing it to room temperature before serving and stirring helps it become scoopable again. If the dip sits for a couple days, a fresh squeeze of lemon juice can help perk up the flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 200 g / 7 oz smoked salmon (or trout)
  • 200 g / 7 oz cream cheese full fat, Philadelphia brand
  • 1/4 cup / 55g sour cream (Note 1)
  • 1/4 cup / 60g mayonnaise (Note 1, 2)
  • 1/4 cup dill roughly chopped, fresh
  • 1/2 garlic minced, clove
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon 1 lemon, zest
  • 1 - 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • Pinch salt
  • Pinch black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a food processor, starting with 1 tbsp lemon juice. Only use a small pinch of salt to start because smoked salmon is salty, also bear in mind saltiness of crackers being used.
  2. Whizz until fairly smooth - about 10 seconds on high - scraping sides as required.
  3. Adjust lemon and salt to taste. Whizz again briefly.
  4. Transfer into bowl, garnish with lemon slices and more dill if desired. Serve at room temperature with crackers - I like using melba toasts and mini crostinis.

Notes

  • You can substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream and mayonnaise for a lighter dip.
  • Use Hellmann's or S&W whole egg mayonnaise for best flavor.
  • The dip should be consumed within the salmon's freshness period; check packaging for guidance.
  • Refrigerated dip firms up; bring to room temperature and stir before serving for easier scooping.
  • After a couple days, fresh lemon juice can refresh the dip's flavor.
