Smoked Salmon Dip Recipe
Description
The Smoked Salmon Dip Recipe balances smoked salmon with creamy dairy ingredients including cream cheese, mayonnaise, and crème fraîche. Jarlsberg cheese adds a mild nutty flavor and additional creaminess. Fresh dill, capers, green onion, and red onion bring herbaceous and sharp notes that contrast with the rich base. Lemon juice provides acidity to lighten the overall flavor. The mixture is blended until smooth, folding in salmon gently to maintain texture. Served chilled, this dip pairs well with crackers, slices of bread, or fresh vegetables.
The flavors combine to deliver a smoky, tangy, and slightly creamy dip with varied soft and crisp textures from the accompanying ingredients. It works well as an appetizer or light snack.
This dip can be prepared a day ahead to enhance flavor melding. It stores well refrigerated for up to four days and can be frozen for up to three months, though thawing and remixing might be required to restore the original consistency. Sour cream can replace crème fraîche if necessary, and Swiss cheese is an acceptable substitute for Jarlsberg.
Ingredients
- ½ pound smoked salmon roughly chopped or pulled with forks
- 8 ounces cream cheese softened
- ¾ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup crème fraîche
- lemon juice juice of ½ lemon or about 2 tablespoons
- 4 ounces Jarlsberg cheese shredded
- ¼ cup green onion sliced
- ½ red onion small peeled and small diced
- 2 tablespoons dill chopped, fresh
- 2 tablespoons caper roughly chopped
- salt coarse sea salt, cracked, to taste
- black pepper coarse sea salt, cracked, to taste
Instructions
- If you are smoking the salmon yourself, using a fork or spoon, break it up into smaller bite-size pieces.
- Next, in a large bowl add in the cream cheese, mayonnaise, crème fraiche, cheese, onions, dill, capers, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Mix using a rubber spatula until completely combined and smooth.
- Fold in the pulled smoked salmon and mix until combined.
- Serve with assorted crackers, bread, and veggies.
Notes
- This dip can be prepared up to one day in advance to allow flavors to meld.
- Store covered in the refrigerator for up to four days or freeze for up to three months; thaw in the fridge and remix before serving if frozen.
- Sour cream is a suitable substitute for crème fraîche in this recipe.
- Regular Swiss cheese can be used instead of Jarlsberg cheese without significantly altering the dip.
