Snakes Tongue Rolls - Halloween Hot Dogs

Snakes Tongue Rolls are hot dog rolls topped with frankfurter strips cut and fried to curl like snake tongues. The strips are shaped with slits to create fork-like ends that curl when cooked, served inside hot dog buns and topped with ketchup, which adds a 'bloody' effect perfect for Halloween.

Description

To prepare Snakes Tongue Rolls, frankfurters are sliced lengthwise into strips with forked ends using a small knife. When fried in hot vegetable oil, these strips curl and develop lightly colored, crispy edges resembling a snake's tongue. The hot dog rolls are then split and filled with the cooked strips, creating a playful and thematic presentation.

The cooking method mainly involves frying to heat the frankfurter strips and encourage them to curl naturally due to the cuts at the end. The hot dog rolls serve as a handheld base, while ketchup adds both flavor and a visual effect resembling blood, enhancing the Halloween theme.

This is a fun, playful snack or party food appropriate for Halloween gatherings or other themed events, appealing particularly to children and those looking for novelty in their food presentation.

Key tips include making sure the frankfurters are cut to include a bit of both inside and outside meat in each strip so they curl properly when fried.

Servings
  • 12 frankfurter

Instructions

  1. Cut each frankfurter into long strips then use a small knife to cut 'forks' in the end of each strip. (see note 1)
  2. Heat the oil in a large fry pan, and once hot add the frankfurter strips.
  3. Cook for 4-5 minutes until hot and lightly colored.
  4. Cut the hot dog rolls down the centre and top with the frankfurter ‘snake tongues’.
  5. Ketchup makes a great 'bloody' sauce for these.

  • Ketchup can be used as a 'bloody' sauce to enhance Halloween presentation.
