Soda Bread with Milk Chocolate and Salted Honey Butter

This Soda Bread with Milk Chocolate and Salted Honey Butter combines classic soda bread ingredients with warm spices and chunks of milk chocolate to create a slightly sweet, tender loaf. The inclusion of buttermilk and baking soda ensures a soft crumb with a light, earthy tang. Paired with a creamy salted honey butter that balances sweetness and salt, it makes a satisfying treat for breakfast or afternoon tea.

Description

Soda Bread with Milk Chocolate and Salted Honey Butter starts with a dough made from all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and warm spices like cinnamon and cardamom. The wet ingredients include buttermilk and egg, providing moisture and richness. Milk chocolate chunks are folded in to add pockets of sweet melting chocolate throughout the bread. The dough is formed into a round with a cross scored on top and baked until golden and set.

The resulting bread has a soft crumb with lightly spiced notes and occasional sweet, melty chocolate bites. The salted honey butter, made by stirring softened butter with honey and salt, adds a rich, creamy spread with a sweet-salty contrast that complements the bread well.

This loaf can be served warm or cooled, making it versatile for various snacking or light meal occasions. It pairs nicely with tea or coffee and can be sliced thick to enjoy the contrast of soft bread and creamy butter.

The recipe’s notes suggest adapting the amount of salt in the butter to taste. Chunks of chocolate are dusted with extra flour to prevent sinking, which helps distribute them evenly in the bread. Cooling the bread in the same baking vessel preserves moisture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for dusting
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 egg lightly beaten
  • 2/3 cups milk chocolate chunks/chips

salted honey butter

  • 1/2 cup butter unsalted
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt or more, or less!

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven the 375 degrees F.
  2. In the bowl of your electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and cardamom. In a smaller bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg.
  3. With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour in the milk mixture. Mix on medium  speed until the dough comes together. Toss the chocolate chunks with a bit of extra flour and add them to dough. Stir to mix.
  4. Place the dough on a floured surface and knead it a few times, using some extra flour if it’s super sticky. Form it into a round and slice an X on the top – I place mine in a dutch oven, so made it about 8 inches wide. You can also place it on a parchment-covered baking sheet.
  5. Bake the dough for about 45 to 55 minutes, until golden on top and set. I cooled mine in the dutch oven it was baked in. You can serve it warm or let it cool completely!

salted honey butter

  1. Stir together ingredients until combined. Sprinkle extra salt on top if desired!

Notes

  • Coat chocolate chunks lightly with flour to keep them suspended evenly in the bread dough.
  • Adjust the salt in the butter to your preference for the right balance of sweetness and saltiness.
  • Cool the baked bread in the baking vessel, like a dutch oven, to keep it moist.
