Sourdough Croutons
Description
This recipe transforms sourdough bread into crunchy croutons by cutting it into cubes and coating with olive oil, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Baking at a high temperature crisps the cubes evenly, creating a crunchy exterior and slightly chewy interior. The Italian seasoning blend infuses herbal notes such as oregano and basil, and the garlic powder adds gentle pungency.
Sourdough bread adds a subtle sour tang that deepens the flavor of the croutons beyond plain bread. These croutons can be used to add texture and flavor to salads, soups, or as a snack on their own. They store well in an airtight container and re-crisp quickly if needed.
Ingredients
- 3 lices sourdough bread cubed (about 4 cups)
- 3 Tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil
- 3 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add sourdough cubes to a large bowl and toss with oil, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper.
- Spread onto prepared baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes, flipping croutons halfway. You’ll know they’re done when they’re crisp and browning.
