Sourdough Croutons
Description
This recipe transforms cubed sourdough bread into crisp, flavorful croutons by coating the cubes evenly with olive oil and a blend of garlic powder, Italian seasoning, optional zaatar, salt, and black pepper. Baking at 350°F until golden ensures a crunchy exterior that can enhance the texture of a variety of dishes.
The mix of seasonings enhances the natural tang of sourdough, bringing savory depth with garlic and herbs while the optional zaatar adds a Middle Eastern touch. These croutons are suitable for sprinkling on salads or soups, providing a crunchy contrast, or using as a topping in casseroles or stuffing.
Once cooled completely, the croutons store well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, sometimes two, maintaining their crunch. The recipe also encourages experimentation with different breads and seasoning blends to suit personal taste.
Ingredients
- 4 cups sourdough bread 12 oz or 360g, cubed
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon zaatar optional
- 1/4 tsp salt
- black pepper freshly cracked
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 F (180C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add the sourdough bread cubes (crust and all) to a large bowl. Drizzle in the olive oil,and add all the remaining ingredients. Toss to combine thoroughly and evenly coat the bread with the oil.
- Spread the coated bread cubes out onto the parchment paper lined baking sheet, spacing them out so they aren't touching each other.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and crunchy. Halfway through baking time, use a spatula to toss the cubes around a little.
- Cool completely, then store in an air tight container at room temperature. Enjoy!
Notes
- Store leftover croutons in an airtight container for up to one week to maintain freshness and crunch.
- Feel free to substitute sourdough with any bread available and adjust herbs and spices to personal preference.
- Enjoy these croutons sprinkled over salads, soups, casseroles, or use them as stuffing ingredients.
