Southern Fried Cabbage

Southern Fried Cabbage combines crisped chopped bacon sautéed with onions and green cabbage seasoned with smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and optionally brown sugar and parsley. The cabbage softens with a slight sweetness and savory smoky depth from the bacon fat and spices, making it a flavorful vegetable side dish often served with southern meals.

Description

This recipe starts by frying chopped bacon until crisp to render flavorful drippings. Onions sautéed in the bacon drippings become translucent, setting a savory base for the cabbage. Green cabbage, cored and chopped, is then added along with smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and optionally brown sugar to enhance sweetness.

The cabbage is cooked with occasional stirring until wilted and tender, sometimes with a touch of water to prevent sticking. The cooked bacon is stirred back into the dish just before serving to add texture and further savory flavor. A sprinkle of fresh parsley adds bright color and a fresh herb note.

Southern Fried Cabbage pairs well as a side for hearty meals and benefits from the blend of smoky bacon, sweet softened cabbage, and aromatic spices. It represents a classic southern vegetable preparation balancing richness and texture.
