Southern Iced Sweet Tea

Southern Iced Sweet Tea is a classic cold beverage made by steeping strong black tea and sweetening it with sugar. The tea is brewed intensely then cooled with additional cold water, resulting in a refreshing drink with a balanced sweetness and robust tea flavor. Luzianne tea is recommended, but any preferred brand works.

Description

This recipe calls for boiling one quart of water before steeping black tea bags for 10 to 15 minutes off the heat, ensuring a strong infusion without bitterness. After removing the tea bags, sugar is dissolved into the hot tea before adding an equal amount of cold water to chill and dilute the concentrate. The resulting tea is sweet and brisk, typical of Southern-style sweet tea enjoyed chilled.

Using a non-reactive pan and beginning with cold water helps preserve the tea’s clear appearance and flavor. Letting the tea cool before refrigerating prevents warping glass pitchers and keeps the tea fresh longer. The tea can be stored in the refrigerator, covered, for about three days.

The recipe can be adapted by swapping sugar with artificial sweeteners. Though Luzianne brand is preferred for its characteristic flavor in the South, any black tea can be used to suit personal tastes.
