Soy sauce butter popcorn

Soy Sauce Butter Popcorn offers a savory twist on classic popcorn by coating freshly popped kernels with a warm mixture of butter, ghee, and soy sauce. The resulting snack combines the crispness of popcorn with a rich, slightly salty glaze enriched by optional seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, and chili flakes. This popcorn variation is a flavorful alternative for those seeking a deeper umami snack experience.

Description

Starting with plain popped corn, a sauce is made by gently melting butter and ghee together, ensuring the butter doesn’t boil to preserve flavor balance. Soy sauce is then added and simmered briefly to meld the flavors. Adding optional spices such as garlic powder, onion powder, or chili flakes personalizes the seasoning profile.

The warm soy butter mixture is allowed to cool slightly before being drizzled over the popcorn, then the kernels are carefully tossed to coat evenly without losing crispness. The combination provides a caramelized soy glaze that enhances the natural popcorn texture with a rich, savory taste and subtle spice when chili is included.

This soy sauce butter seasoning can also be applied to other ingredients like seared mushrooms or steak to add depth of flavor, showcasing its versatility beyond popcorn.

Ingredients

  • Cup popcorn kernels
  • 2 Tablespoons butter You can brown the butter if you want a more caramel flavour
  • 2 Tablespoons ghee Substitute: coconut oil
  • 1-2 Tablespoons soy sauce Start with 1 tablespoon, then taste as different soy brands have different levels of saltiness. If the sauce isn't there yet, add another tablespoon, light
  • garlic powder Optional (if you want some variety, etc
  • chilli flakes
  • onion powder

Instructions

  1. Pop your corn whichever way you like. (I have a beginner's guide to making stovetop popcorn here.)
  2. Heat a pan and melt the butter and ghee (or coconut oil). Lower the fire if necessary to make sure the butter doesn't boil.
  3. Once the butter is completely melted, add the soy sauce and mix well, letting it simmer for a bit then switching off the fire.
  4. If making 1 of the variations of this soy sauce and butter popcorn, now is the time to add the chilli, garlic powder etc
  5. Turn off the fire and allow the butter soy sauce mixture to cool slightly.
  6. Once cooler, pour it over the popcorn and make sure the kernels are well tossed.

Notes

  • Careful heat control when melting butter and ghee prevents burning and preserves a balanced flavor.
  • Start with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and adjust to taste, as saltiness varies by brand.
  • Optional spices like garlic powder, onion powder, and chili flakes add variety and can be mixed into the butter-soy sauce before coating.
  • This soy sauce butter blend also enhances other dishes such as seared mushrooms or steak.
  • Detailed stovetop popcorn popping techniques can improve the base for this recipe.
