Spiced ginger simple syrup
Description
This syrup starts by simmering crushed fresh ginger alongside cinnamon sticks, cloves, and allspice berries in a mixture of sugar and water. Heating dissolves the sugar and gently extracts the spicy, aromatic qualities from the ginger and whole spices, resulting in a thickened, flavorful syrup. The simmering lasts around 30 minutes to develop depth without caramelizing.
After cooling, the syrup is strained to remove solids, leaving a clear, fragrant liquid that balances warmth and sweetness. Depending on desired thickness, the water amount can be adjusted. This simple syrup can enhance beverages such as cocktails and teas, or be drizzled over desserts for added zest.
Ingredients
- 2 ounce ginger crushed or grated, fresh chunk
- 2-3 cinnamon stick
- 4 cloves
- 3 allspice berries
- 2 cups sugar could also use panela or piloncillo
