Spiced Orange Gin and Tonic
Description
The cocktail is built around a spiced orange syrup made by simmering orange peel, sugar, water, star anise, and crushed cardamom pods until sugar dissolves and flavors infuse. After cooling, the syrup can be stored refrigerated for up to a week, maintaining its flavor. The gin and tonic is assembled by combining ice-filled glass with measured amounts of the syrup and gin, topped with tonic water and stirred gently.
Fresh garnishes of orange wedge and rosemary sprig add aromatic layers and visual appeal. The drink balances the sweetness and warmth from the syrup with the botanicals of the gin and the bitter effervescence of tonic, creating a layered sensory experience. It is suited for those who enjoy citrus-infused cocktails with a hint of spice.
Ingredients
spiced orange syrup
- orange peel from 1 orange
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup water
- 2 star anise
- 1 teaspoon cardamom pods crushed, whole
gin and tonic
- 1 to 2 ounces orange syrup spiced
- 2 ounces gin
- 4 ounces tonic water
- orange fresh wedge spritz
- rosemary sprigs for garnish
Instructions
- spiced orange syrup
- Combine the ingredients in a saucepan and heat over medium-low heat. Whisk until the sugar dissolves. Bring the mixture to a simmer then turn off the heat. Let cool to room temperature - you can store this in the fridge for a week or so. I leave the orange and spices in for even more flavor infusion. It’s great to make ahead of time!
- gin and tonic
- Fill the glass with ice. Add in the orange syrup and gin - you can add as much syrup as you'd like. Top with the tonic water. Stir to combine. Add a fresh orange wedge and a sprig of rosemary.
