Spicy Cucumber Salad

Spicy Cucumber Salad consists of sliced cucumbers tossed in a tangy, savory dressing with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and a touch of sweetness from agave or maple syrup. Red pepper flakes add a spicy kick, balanced by a sprinkle of sesame seeds and green onions for garnish. The cucumbers maintain a crisp texture, enhanced by a resting time to meld flavors, making it refreshing and flavorful.

Description

This salad combines thin slices of cucumber with a dressing made from salt, minced garlic and ginger, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and a sweetener such as agave or maple syrup, along with crushed red pepper flakes for heat. The dressing is allowed to sit before combining with cucumbers, improving flavor integration.

The method preserves cucumber texture by avoiding overly thin slices that could become limp. The salad is garnished with thinly sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and additional red pepper flakes for contrast in flavor and appearance.

This dish suits light meals or as a refreshing side, with the combination of tangy, spicy, and sweet notes complementing the crunchy cucumber base. Preparing the dressing in advance and adjusting seasoning after combining helps customize flavor intensity to preference.

Notes

  • Slice cucumbers thick enough to retain crispness and avoid rapid sogginess.
  • Make the dressing ahead of time to allow flavors to meld thoroughly before mixing with cucumbers.
  • Use a mandoline or slicing tool to achieve uniform cucumber slices quickly and evenly.
  • After dressing the cucumbers, adjust seasoning as needed to balance flavors before serving.
