Spicy Honey
Description
Spicy Honey is a simple infusion made by heating honey with crushed red pepper flakes, a splash of apple cider vinegar, and a pinch of kosher salt. The warming process, carefully done on low heat for 15-20 minutes without reaching a simmer, allows the heat from the pepper flakes to mellow into the honey. The vinegar introduces a faint acidity that balances the sweetness, while salt enhances the overall flavor.
This spicy honey can be cooled and served as is or strained to remove pepper flakes for a smoother texture. It works well as a topping or glaze for savory dishes, adding both sweetness and heat, or as an accompaniment to cheeses and snacks.
Because it uses just a few pantry ingredients, it can be prepared ahead and stored for later use. Mild heating preserves the delicate floral notes of the honey.
Ingredients
- 1 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes or Aleppo pepper flakes
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
