Spicy Korean Tofu

Spicy Korean Tofu consists of pan-fried firm tofu slices simmered in a spicy sauce made from Korean red chili powder, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and optional red chili. The tofu soaks in the sauce while browning, resulting in a mildly spicy, slightly sweet dish topped with scallions and sesame seeds.

Description

The recipe starts with firm tofu cut into rectangles and dried to prevent sogginess. The sauce combines Korean red chili powder with soy sauce, sugar, garlic, sesame oil, and water to create a balanced spicy-sweet flavor. Pan-frying the tofu until browned gives it a lightly crisp exterior while the subsequent simmering gently infuses the sauce.

This dish is served at room temperature and garnished with scallions for a fresh bite along with sesame seeds for texture. It can be enjoyed as a side dish or light main course with rice.

Firm tofu is recommended to maintain shape during cooking and to absorb the sauce well.

Ingredients

Servings

Sauce:

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 talk green onion stem removed and cut into small rounds
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons red chili powder Korean
  • 1 red chili seeded, pounded with mortar and pestle, optional
  • 1 teaspoon white sesame
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/3 cup water

Instructions

  1. Cut the tofu into ¼-inch (5mm) thick rectangles and pat dry with paper towels. Mix all the ingredients for the sauce together and set aside.
  2. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add the oil. Once the oil is hot, add the tofu and pan-fry until browned on both sides. Add the sauce to the skillet and lower the heat. Simmer the tofu until the sauce reduces but remains somewhat wet. Turn the tofu over to simmer on both sides.
  3. Transfer the tofu to a serving platter and top with chopped scallions. Serve at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use firm tofu to keep the pieces intact and allow them to soften deliciously after braising in the sauce.
