Spicy Sauteed Mushrooms

Spicy Sauteed Mushrooms are cooked with onion, garlic, and minced jalapeno, then seasoned with turmeric and cumin, delivering earthy and spicy notes. The mushrooms are sautéed until their moisture evaporates and they develop a light brown color, giving a tender yet slightly crisp texture. A splash of lemon juice brightens the flavors, producing a versatile side dish or topping with a moderate heat level that can be adjusted.

Description

This recipe sautés chopped onions until softened, then adds sliced mushrooms, garlic, and jalapeno to infuse the dish with aromatic and spicy elements. Turmeric and ground cumin contribute warm, earthy spices that complement the mushrooms. Cooking over medium-low heat allows the mushrooms to release and then lose their moisture, resulting in a light brown, fried appearance without sogginess.

Finishing the dish with lemon juice adds brightness and balances the spices. The texture remains tender yet with a bit of chew from the mushrooms and softness from the cooked onion. The jalapeno provides a noticeable but modifiable heat that permeates the dish.

This sautéed mushroom dish can accompany meats, be served over rice or grains, or be included in wraps and sandwiches. Adjust the jalapeno quantity to suit your preference for spiciness, or substitute with a milder pepper if desired.

  • 1/2 onion chopped
  • 1 lb mushrooms sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper minced
  • 2 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon cumin ground
  • 2 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes to soften.
  2. Add the mushrooms, garlic, jalapeno pepper and turmeric and stir to mix well. Let fry over medium low heat for about 15 minutes, until the mushrooms have released most of their water and look fried and light brown.
  3. Stir in the lemon juice and cumin and cook for 5 minutes more.

Notes

  • Adjust jalapeno quantity to control the heat level according to taste.
  • Substitute with a milder pepper like Anaheim if less spice is preferred.
