Spiked mulled apple cider
Description
This recipe for Spiked Mulled Apple Cider involves simmering apple cider with aromatic whole spices—cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and orange peel—over low heat to extract their warm and bright flavors. The cider is heated gently without boiling for around 30 minutes to preserve delicate spice notes. Before serving, brandy, apple brandy, rum, or spiced rum is added to impart depth and warmth to the drink.
The mulled cider is strained when served, removing the whole spices and peels for a smooth, spiced beverage. It is poured over the brandy placed at the bottom of glasses, making for a gentle and comforting alcoholic drink enjoyed warm. This drink fits well during colder seasons and social occasions.
An alternative preparation suggests using a slow cooker to warm the beverage for several hours on low, freeing stovetop space and delivering evenly infused flavors.
